General FAQs for birth & postpartum WORK WITH IBP

What training do I need?

Birth and postpartum doulas affiliated with Indiana Birth & Postpartum must complete training and certification. We’re open to multiple programs, and we highly recommend options such as ProDoula, DONA, CAPPA, and others. Your training is your own investment and achievement, and IBP clients cannot be used for certification purposes.

How do I choose a training program?

There are many great programs available! We’re looking for self-motivated, independent doulas who take initiative and are committed to learning about the profession. For postpartum, a specific postpartum doula training is required- not just NCS training.

What else is required?

IBP Independent Contractors must maintain current CPR certification, carry professional liability insurance through their registered LLC, and pass a background check.

When should I reach out about joining IBP?

We recommend connecting with us before committing to a postpartum or birth doula training, or after completing your certification.

What is ibp looking for in a doula?

We have extremely high standards! When we opened Indiana Birth & Postpartum, there were only a couple of agencies, a handful of doula partnerships, and several solo doulas in our area. Since then, our local doula community has grown tremendously. We’ve seen doulas naturally gravitate toward different areas of the profession:

• Content creation & networking- building an online presence and community.

• Education & virtual support- creating additional revenue streams beyond direct client care.

• Direct client care- focusing on consistent, face-to-face support for families.

We fall in the direct client care lane. We’re all about women supporting women, and we believe the more professional doulas in our community, the better! We just simply can’t be in every lane, so our specialty is connecting doulas with incredible families and providing meaningful, face-to-face support.

Our IBP team is made up of professional, working doulas who deeply want to focus on the heart of doula work: being there. In a world full of technology and information, our clients need their doulas to show up, literally. There is no replacing human connection.

This intimate, hands-on side of doula work is deep in our marrow. It’s why, even as busy business owners, we continue to work directly with clients as birth and postpartum doulas alongside our team.

The doulas who are the best fit for IBP genuinely want to provide face-to-face doula care above all else.

How does IBP show up for clients?

Our doulas lead with:

Will I have a mentor as a new IBP doula?

Yes! Mentorship is one of our favorite parts of being a team. IBP doulas have direct access to both of us 24/7, along with the collective knowledge and support of our entire team. We don’t offer outside mentorship simply because our client load keeps us very busy, but we pour that support into the doulas who are part of IBP.

Does mentoring cost anything?

No. We do not charge our affiliated doulas for mentorship or support. We’re invested in your success and well-being, and we’re always happy to answer questions, share what we’ve learned, process the hard stuff, and celebrate the wins alongside you.

What is a typical IBP doula’s client load?

It varies based on the doula’s wishes and the client’s needs. What matters most: flexibility, reliability, and consistency.

Postpartum doulas need to plan their availability well in advance. Birth doulas participate in our partnership model and typically share an on-call schedule with their partner. Birth and postpartum doulas should have their personal schedules planned out about six months in advance.
